Shortlist revealed for McCrea Financial Services 2021/22 Player of the Season

Richie Gray

The first signing of Danny Wilson as head coach, the experience and leadership of Gray, 32, has shone throughout the 2021/22 campaign as the second rower continues to terrorize the opposition for the club from his hometown.

The greatest player to ever represent the Glasgow Warriors, his tally of 12 line-up interceptions leads the entire URC this season, three clear of second-placed Vodacom Bulls’ Ruan Nortje.

Gray – who recently signed a new contract with the club – has featured in all of the club’s matches so far in 2021/22, starting each of his appearances apart from the visit to the Scarlets in early March.

Sam Johnson

Scotland international Johnson has been the model of consistency throughout the 2021/22 season, forming a secure partnership in midfield with Sione Tuipulotu in URC and European competition.

He picked up his first-ever player of the match award in October’s win over Cell C Sharks at Scotstoun, playing his part in the 35-24 win over Warrior Nation.

The center has made 12 appearances so far this campaign, scoring his only try so far in the 32-28 defeat to Cardiff at Arms Park in March.

Josh McKay

Since making his debut against the Dragons in December 2021, fullback McKay has quickly become a fixture in Danny Wilson’s squad back three.

A world-class try on Sam Davies on his debut gave Warrior Nation a taste of what to expect from the New Zealander, before registering his first try in a Glasgow shirt with a stylish finish against the Ospreys in January.

Highlight-worthy scores against Edinburgh and Lyon showed the 24-year-old’s ability with the ball in hand, with his positional sense and awareness of the game making him a valuable member of the Warriors setup.

Sione Tuipulotu

An impressive debut campaign for the Warriors sees Tuipulotu round out the shortlist of seven players, having immediately become a favorite with Warrior Nation fans since his summer arrival from Yamaha Jubilo.

Winner of the McCrea Financial Services Warrior of the Month award for December 2021, the center has scored four tries in his 18 appearances for the Warriors so far.

Combining pace, strength and footwork and comfortable inside or outside the centre, Tuipulotu’s form earned him his Scotland debut against Tonga in the 2021 Autumn Nations Series at BT Murrayfield before coming off the bench in the Calcutta Cup victory over England in the 2022 Guinness Six. nations.
